Motorola ATRIX, The World Most Powerfull Smartphone with Android OS

The Motorola Atrix is the flagship handset of the company's new Android lineup. It sports a dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and has some clever peripherals available for it. We've been hands-on to see if it can live up to the hype.

The dual-core Motorola Atrix has a form of virtualization built in, courtesy of Citrix Receiver. This small program allows users to log onto virtualized Windows 7 desktops provided via Citrix XenApp. As such, this is the first implementation of Citrix's NirvanaPhone vision.

The phone's design is suitably appealing with a single glass panel filling the front and a simple mottled design adorning the back. Four touch sensitive buttons are incorporated into the front, below the screen, and while they don't disappear when not in use, as on the Google Nexus S, they are nice and responsive.

The Motorola HD Multimedia Dock has three USB ports and an HDMI port enabling connections to a keyboard, mouse, speakers and HDMI-compatible monitor for working at your desk/office, or connecting to an HDMI-compatible television and home theater audio system for interacting with content and enjoying video, music, games and more in your living room.

The Atrix ships and functions as a standalone device, but Motorola also offers two accessories: a laptop dock and a HDTV dock. Unlike a regular computer, the Atrix laptop dock lacks a CPU and storage. Instead, it sports a large battery pack, a full keyboard, a touchpad, stereo speakers, and a 11.6 inch display. It weighs just 2.4 pounds, but the additional batteries can keep the Atrix running for nearly eight hours according to Motorola. The HDTV dock has a HDMI output and USB ports for a keyboard and mouse. When docked, it offers users access to either the webtop or media center interface. Motorola even includes an infrared remote control with the dock to control media playback.

Using the Atrix in this way points to a possible future scenario where cell phones act as a cloud computing bridge device. Here's how we might work in just a few years' time.

The Atrix really can be a replacement for a desktop; once docked, users can fire up Citrix Receiver and access a Windows desktop provided for them by their employer. All the number crunching is done remotely, and all the phone has to do is display the desktop. In other words, the computing power of the phone isn't an issue.
