The fantasy of the Playstation phone is now a reality with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. The Xperia Play is the first mobile to bear PlayStation certification, which is a fact that is compounded by its inclusion of slide-out gaming controls which features a four-way D-pad, dual touch-sensitive areas to replace analogue sticks and the shape-emblazoned buttons which have defined PlayStation controllers for years.
The Xperia Play might not have a fancy dual-core processor, but it will be one of the first Android devices to have dedicated game controls, be PlayStation certified, and have access to a huge library of PSX classics.
All of the gaming goodness is shot into the eyes of the user via the Xperia Play’s four inch touchscreen display and the native resolution of 854×480 will give it a sharp, vivid ability to showcase the titles which are made available for it.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is very different to other smartphones like the HTC Gratia and the Samsung Galaxy Ace. The HTC Gratia runs Android 2.2 compared to the Xperia Play’s fresher 2.3 version of Google’s platform and it also has a considerably larger display. Meanwhile the Samsung Galaxy Ace is another modest handset, with its 3.5 inch display hardly matching up to that of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.
As well as the slide out controls the Xperia Play will also have a set of shoulder buttons to add even more options for interactivity which gamers will be familiar with and newcomers will learn to love.
The Xperia Play is coming to Canada, exclusively heading to Rogers. So far it has been confirmed on their website that the device will be available to their customers, but there’s no word regarding pricing or a launch date.
